Under 50….Over 50…..Is this You?
So many older and younger people too, have physical "Niggles" or minor but significant injuries which they usually, learn to manage or "Live with" on an everyday basis.
Advice is often dispensed along the lines of "Just do this when it happens or gets a bit much," or "Just do that and it won’t trouble you quite so much, or only cause you problems now and again."
Visits to practitioners all too often result in addressing the symptoms not the deep and sometimes physiologically distant, root causes of the problems. Such visits are all very well for a limited period of time, until once again, the cause asserts itself and you go back again, to have the resultant pain/discomfort "Fixed" for a while.
That is of course, until inevitably… it surfaces yet again!
Remember that although osteopaths and chiropractors do provide a much-appreciated service, they have no training in Biomechanics and there is no Exercise Biomechanics training in a physiotherapy degree either, so the expertise gap is a very significant one.
Biomechanics is a precise analytical science that deals with the human body in all forms of movement and motion, whatever that might involve. It is a very intricate skill that has generated all manner of short and vocational courses which in truth, do not even remotely approach in-depth analytical Biomechanics, which is arguably, probably the most technically specialised of all the Sports Sciences.
Advanced biomechanical knowledge addresses a condition, by subtly; discovering a person’s unique physical movement patterns and musculo-skeletal adjustments, to then discover exactly where the "Real" problem lies. Similar to finding a river’s source by tracing the flow, direction and nature of it’s tributaries.
If an area of the body repeatedly goes "Wrong," it will more than likely be sore/painful and defence mechanisms will be firmly in place. Directly approaching that "Defended" trauma spot-specifically, will almost certainly 99% of the time, actually escalate the intensity of the defences and even more pain or discomfort will result! This can result in a more protracted and less efficient recovery back to normal.
Any area of the body that is not its ‘usual self’ will call for assistance from its musculo-skeletal ‘helpers’ elsewhere to try and maintain its normal function. However, if when called upon, those "Helpers" are not in particularly good shape and not fully up to the ‘rescue’ task, then the efforts of the problem area itself to strive for recovery will be more difficult and laborious, due to being left to a near solo effort to get better.
In muscle terminology, muscles that assist other muscles are called "Synergists" and the muscle directly responsible for an action they assist is called a "Prime mover." This is an interchangeable role, as a synergist with a problem becomes a prime mover and other muscles that were previously prime movers, then swop roles to become its synergists to help it. This to-and-fro fluctuating status quo is in a dynamically changing state all the time within the human body, where injury, exercise and recovery are taking place.
So when you have a problem; analysing and finding its helpers, then first and foremost, strengthening them appropriately, BEFORE working directly on the problem area itself, is very much the way forward successfully.
Since the problem area/muscle/injured joint itself expends its injured and consequently limited resources very quickly, its newly efficient helpers are then able to step in competently and significantly assist matters, enabling that little bit of extra progress to take place, which the injured part couldn’t have achieved on its own
Once this clinical methodology is implemented, remarks like "My back ached for years, but it’s alright now" or "I was a martyr to my knees for ages, but no problem these days" are common place for Alan. He’s heard such comments dozens and dozens of times over the years.
This constant ‘song’ of persistent and nagging problems that lower the quality of everyday life, is heard most often from the 50+ age group, who sadly, commonly regard such residual problems and constant irritations as an unfortunate, but unavoidable part/fact of their life
This need not be so at all!
Alan’s 42 year career and membership of the highly regarded organisations listed on the ‘Fields’ page of this website, speaks for itself and clearly announces the level of expert you have at your disposal here.
Accepting your fate as someone who’s "Doomed" to always be plagued by a physical condition/ irritating problem that may not necessarily be medically dramatic or life threatening, but constantly demeans the quality of your everyday life, is a scenario you might well be able to get rid of permanently!
Consider Alan’s skills, knowledge and expertise which not only cover just your musculo-skeletal and physiology aspects, but encompass your nutrition too and very often, its significant clinical relevance in helping to remedy your problem
An 18 year 100% success rate with all his one-to-one clients certainly indicates that whatever he does and however he does it…he simply must be doing it right!
